Chinglish is Chinese English. Japlish is Japanese English and Tinglish is Thai English. Singlish is Singapore English. And there must be more. They are all spoken or written English, that is influenced by the local language, and many times they are the result of direct translation. The Asians really try hard to accommodate the foreigner, because in general they are hospitable people. In doing so, they post many of their signs in English as well as the local language, but often they get a bit confused. Personally, Singlish is a bit different because their basic English is very good. It’s the accent to their English that makes it sound ‘different’. To me it sounds very much like a ‘sing song’ version of English, lots of tonal accents. They also mix many Malay and Chinese words while communicating in English. Regardless, everything is fine as long as we get the message across! Below are a few samples of the various “Lishs”. Hope you can read them clearly. The first says, “You can enjoy the fresh air after finishing a civilized urinating” The fake Addidas shirt says Lint and Right. I’m sure the pasta and pizza restaurant in the third photo serves delicious food, at least we know it’s fresh and warm. In the last photo, the shop name is Craps and underneath says F I T. I wonder what kind of business that is? Hope you enjoy them!
