Making your own sesame buns sounds really intimidating.  But, my girlfriend Winnie has simplified it to an art!  This filling has only two ingredients, well, three if you count the salt.  Daikon or Japanese radish and green onions.  That’s all!  She used frozen pastry sheets and it was a breeze to make.  Don’t believe me?

Before we start, just watch this video.  Winnie shows us how to puts the sesame seeds on the buns.  Doesn’t this look like fun?!  It is! The best part is, they taste wonderful.

It looks complicated, but actually it’s quite simple.  First, dip half the filled dough in water then place the bun on a plate of sesame seeds and press it down with your palm.  The bun is now flat and the water allows the seeds to stick to the dough.  Flip it over and voila, you have your sesame bun!  Okay, let’s get on with the recipe!  I’ve added a video at the end to show you how Winnie makes the bun.  The key is to double up the pastry.  Because when smashed, using only a single layer will cause the dough to tear.  Although the recipe is long and sounds complicated, once you watch the video you’ll realize it’s not that difficult.   If you have any questions, just leave me a comment below.

Savory baked Chinese sesame bun stuffed with daikon and green onions.
Ingredients
Filling
  • 1 daikon - Japanese radish
  • 1 bunch green onion - about 8 stalks
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • salt
Pastry
  • 1 packet frozen pastry sheets
  • ½-1 cup roasted sesame seeds
Instructions
Filling
  1. peel daikon and shred
  2. chop green onions
  3. heat a frying pan, and add oil when pan is hot
  4. add green onions and cook until fragrant
  5. add shredded daikon
  6. add salt to taste
  7. set filling aside
Pastry
  1. Defrost frozen pastry as directed on packet
  2. For this recipe, one sheet of pastry is too thin to create the buns. You need to double the sheets. Double pastry and make 2" x 2" squares
How to fill pastry
  1. Hold pastry in palm
  2. Gently, make an indentation in the center
  3. Add about a tablespoon or more of filling in center of pastry.
  4. Using your thumb and index finger thin the edges of the pastry.
  5. Then gently pull the edges to the center, pinching the pastry to form a round bun sealing the filling completely.
Finishing touch to cover buns with sesame seed and bake
  1. Pre-heat oven to 375.
  2. Prepare 2 cookie sheets and line with parchment paper.
  3. Get a small bowl and fill half way with water. Set aside.
  4. In a flat plate, place the sesame seeds so they are spread evenly at the bottom and set aside.
  5. Hold one filled bun gently and dip the bottom half in water.
  6. Next, dip the bottom in the plate of sesame seeds.
  7. Using your palm, press the bun flat.
  8. Flip and place on lined cookie sheet
  9. Tada! Now the sesame seeds are on the top, and buns are ready to bake.
  10. Please watch the video!
  11. Bake for 15 minutes at 375F.
Notes
It's best when just out of the hot oven.
But, you can also keep it in the refrigerator to enjoy later.
Just put it in the toaster oven to reheat.

Isn’t this fun!  Thanks Winnie!  Hope you give it a try. And let me know how your sesame buns turned out.
