Do you believe in destiny? Do you think you have a soulmate?

In Japan, it is believed that some of us are destined to be with a particular partner in this life. An invisible red string connects your fingers together. This is called the red string of fate. In Japanese, they say, “Akai ito de musubareteru”.

When I was a young single girl in Tokyo, I came across this phrase for the first time. A colleague of mine was dating here and there, but never seemed to have a “serious” boyfriend. Then one morning she arrived at the office with excitement. Well, something was definitely different. Her energy was high. You could just feel it bursting out of her skin. For this post I’ll call her Yoko, because all my friends would know who I was talking about.

The night before, a group of her friends, who lived in her neighborhood went out for a beer. On a whim, Kana decided to invite her husband’s friend because she thought that he had a lot in common with Yoko. Apparently, Kana was absolutely right. This guy and Yoko had so much in common, they couldn’t stop talking until 4:00 a.m. in the morning!

Yoko said it was like they already knew each other. Then she said the phrase, “akai ito de musubareteru” , “we are connected with the red string of fate”.

She knew at that moment, he was the one. And sure enough, they got engaged a few months later. I thought it seemed really soon for her to rush into marriage, but they were both so sure. And they were right. They have had a solid marriage for thirty years.

Maybe not all of us are that fortunate to find that invisible red string connection with our “soulmate”.

But, the red string can also connect you with your child, colleague, friend, or parent. I feel connected to many people I meet on a daily basis. Although there may not be a red string, I do feel we are all connected and believe there is a reason why we meet.

Are you connected to someone with an invisible red string of fate?

  1. @R Shore. I don’t know any Japanese symbolism for a blue string, however, in Asian psychology, navy blue signifies trust. Maybe you are connected through someone because you have great trust in them. Does this ring true to you?

  2. Hi… Naruto The Last Movie got me here… I am a Japanese Hip Hop producer and 21 year old artist attending a university – studying Computer Science – to prepare my entrance for the Music Industry. Lately I have been losing much hope – in every aspect. Although I am gaining many connections with upcoming artists and famous artists, I am losing confidence in my own work. Every track that I make I am unsatisfied with I lost the ability to memorize and perform on stage 5 years ago – and for that reason I stopped performing as a cellist. I am still desiring to perform – as a rap artist – but I am having little luck memorizing. I am shocked – and sad at how many of my friends have become so engulfed in social media – such as Instagram – that it has effected their psychological focus from friendship to social media celebrities. I have had the inability to make simple decisions ever since I had an out-of-body experience at a sacred buddhist temple in Japan – and it worries me whether I am currently on the right path. I always seem to dream and long another reality where I would have been a great person for everyone – how I could influenced many people in the right way – and always long for a future where someone is always by my side. I regret some of the actions I committed – and some of the things I was unable to stop due to the interference of others has changed many of my friends into regrettably people I can no longer respect – after looking twice. I suffer from memory loss – and it is hard to remember my day-to-day activities. I do pray in my soul that I will eventually meet the person I was originally destined for – but I just need a way to make the right decisions to find this person. I feel that – there is a road block from my true fate. I know the true answer lies in the sacred temple in Japan – but as of now I am unable to visit Japan for another year or two. I try to ask my ancestors – but I do not feel their presence. I feel very alone spiritually. However – I could care less about the worries I listed. The only thing I would ever want – is to meet my destined partner. My health is declining – and I am fighting for my life until I meet this person. What would you be your advice?

  3. Hi, welcome and I’m glad Naruto brought you here. That’s interesting. You seem highly gifted in music. Music and science go together. I sense you’re smart and sensitive.
I’m sorry to hear about your memory loss. Is this a medical thing that can be improved with the right foods? My later father suffered from dementia and coconut oil does wonder. Give it a try.
So sorry to hear that your health is declining and you are fighting until you meet this person. They say when you are searching too hard, you won’t find it. Just like grasping sand in your hand. The tighter you squeeze, the less sand you’re able to hold. Keep your palm open and loose, then you can hold the sand.
My advice would be to read up on improving your health. Every person is different. Find what works best for you. Add exercise to that too. Visualize your healthy self.
Then work on your music and imagine how your music will bring joy to many people. You may find someone who shares your passion. It’s when you’re not looking, you will meet your destined partner. Keep an open mind and an open heart.
    best wishes,
    Jenny
