People often ask: Is it good feng shui to place a “prosperity frog” in the living room near the front door for money or luck? The so-called “prosperity frog” is actually a three-legged toad holding coins in its mouth.
Jenny Hones answers:
The Jin Chan (Golden Toad), also called Chan Chuy (Toad) or “Zhaocai Chan Chu” (wealth-beckoning toad), is most commonly translated as “Money Toad” or “Money Frog”.
According to Chinese legend, the three-legged toad was a pet of Chinese prosperity god, Liu Hai. As the story goes, the toad had the ability to bring gold coins for Liu Hai to dispense to poor people. Though a beautiful story, it is not a feng shui tradition.
This intriguing idea has brought a lot of business to those who make and sell three-legged toads. If you like the idea or find it humorous it is fine, but do not expect it to bring you fortune. There is a Chinese saying, “do not climb a tree to look for fish”.
