Daikon and Green Onion Sesame Buns

Savory baked Chinese sesame bun stuffed with daikon and green onions.

  • 1 daikon - Japanese radish
  • 1 bunch green onion - about 8 stalks
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • salt
  • 1 packet frozen pastry sheets
  • ½-1 cup roasted sesame seeds
  1. peel daikon and shred
  2. chop green onions
  3. heat a frying pan, and add oil when pan is hot
  4. add green onions and cook until fragrant
  5. add shredded daikon
  6. add salt to taste
  7. set filling aside
  1. Defrost frozen pastry as directed on packet
  2. For this recipe, one sheet of pastry is too thin to create the buns. You need to double the sheets. Double pastry and make 2" x 2" squares
How to fill pastry
  1. Hold pastry in palm
  2. Gently, make an indentation in the center
  3. Add about a tablespoon or more of filling in center of pastry.
  4. Using your thumb and index finger thin the edges of the pastry.
  5. Then gently pull the edges to the center, pinching the pastry to form a round bun sealing the filling completely.
Finishing touch to cover buns with sesame seed and bake
  1. Pre-heat oven to 375.
  2. Prepare 2 cookie sheets and line with parchment paper.
  3. Get a small bowl and fill half way with water. Set aside.
  4. In a flat plate, place the sesame seeds so they are spread evenly at the bottom and set aside.
  5. Hold one filled bun gently and dip the bottom half in water.
  6. Next, dip the bottom in the plate of sesame seeds.
  7. Using your palm, press the bun flat.
  8. Flip and place on lined cookie sheet
  9. Tada! Now the sesame seeds are on the top, and buns are ready to bake.

  11. Bake for 15 minutes at 375F.
It's best when just out of the hot oven.
But, you can also keep it in the refrigerator to enjoy later.
Just put it in the toaster oven to reheat.
